Gannet Island

After a few Easterlies, frustrated at not getting out diving, I decided that the West Coast was the place to be. I got in touch with David Donald who owns the 'Crazy Horse' a 12m Sport Fisher with heaps of space, based out of Kawhia harbour.

Gannet Island itself lies about 12miles out and get absolutely battered by the west coast. On our windless day, it was still getting smashed by the swell. It rolls all the way round the rock and is definitely not a place for inexperienced people! We dived both the East and West sides, covered 3 or 4 different spots.
Underwater the topography was cliffs onto a sloping boulder slop which was swept very clean, with minimal algae. There was an unusually large amount of Red Moki, we saw some huge Kingies and many people seen Carpet Sharks snoozing on the bottom.

A very different and worthwhile place to dive, you just really need the weather to dive here!
